Protect the puzzle from folds, trim uncertainty, and narrow columns. Shorter clues reduce reflow.
Print planning guide
Choose the solving experience first, then size the grid. A puzzle that works on an individual sheet may become unreadable in a newspaper or awkwardly dense on a shared sign.
| Format | Useful starting point | Typical clue count | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| A5 / 5.5 × 8.5 in | Compact portrait layout | 8–12 | Programs, place settings, welcome bags |
| A4 / US Letter | Full individual sheet | 10–18 | Table activity, shower game, rehearsal dinner |
| A3 / 11 × 17 in | Shared table or newspaper spread | 12–20 | Two-person solving, folded newspaper feature |
| 24 × 36 in | Large sign or foam board | 10–16 | Cocktail-hour Sip & Solve |
| 36 × 48 in | Statement board for a large room | 12–20 | Large venue, greater viewing distance |
Guests need room to read the clue number and write one clear letter. For handheld print, begin by testing cells around 7–10 mm. For a standing sign, begin much larger and test with the exact marker that will be supplied. These are starting points, not printer specifications.
The grid is only one part of the component. Across and Down lists, a short instruction, the couple's names, and breathing room all compete for the same area. A board also needs an accessible writing zone: if the lowest cells sit near the floor or behind an easel lip, the nominal size is misleading.
Protect the puzzle from folds, trim uncertainty, and narrow columns. Shorter clues reduce reflow.
Allow room for the guest's hand and keep the answer key with the host rather than on the reverse if ink may show through.
Test viewing distance, easel height, marker width, and whether guests can reach every cell.
| File | Choose it when | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | A designer needs to resize, recolor, or place the component. | Verify font handling after import into Canva or the layout app. |
| The appearance and physical size are approved. | Place at 100% scale where possible and confirm the PDF page box. | |
| PNG/JPG | A platform cannot accept vector artwork. | Export at the final physical size and check thin grid lines carefully. |
Our reviewed delivery includes a fixed PDF and editable SVG so the approved proof and flexible layout asset stay together.
Keep the crossword grid and clue text inside the printer's safe area. Background artwork may extend into bleed, but the solving content normally should not. For a wedding newspaper, mark every fold before placing the component; for mounted boards, account for trim and the easel support.
Planners and studios can create a reusable brief with the print specification handoff tool.
Lightweight and affordable, but it needs a backing board or frame for an easel.
Rigid and easy to display. Confirm whether the surface accepts the intended marker.
Useful for correcting guesses, but test glare and erasing before the event.
Visually striking but reflective. High contrast and suitable markers are essential.
24 × 36 inches is a common starting point for an easel, while 36 × 48 inches offers more visibility in a large room. The correct choice depends on clue count, cell size, venue, and viewing distance.
Usually the grid and clues stay inside the safe area. Only background artwork typically extends into bleed. Follow the printer's template.
Yes, but lock the proportions and inspect the smallest clue text after resizing. Export a fresh PDF and review it outside Canva.
